Regions of Canada

IMG_4839

This spring, we have some wonderful work that we will be engaged in. As we continue into our Social Studies unit, our students have begun to identify an endangered animal in each region of Canada. We will be studying the environmental impacts of industry on the animals from each region. We will also be creating some art in the style of Norval Morrisseau – an Ojibwe artist from Ontario – to symbolize our endangered animals. Our students will have the amazing opportunity to share, ask questions and receive feedback from the Social Studies Grade 9 students at another high school:)

Our students are tweeting out their questions (check out our class twitter feed), and also asking ‘Rich’ questions over Green Screen to send to the class! We hope that as we go with our projects that we will get great feedback from our partners!

Here is a wonderful Shadow Puppet put together by one of our amazing students that shows some of the art that we have practiced!!

We are also continuing with our last month of the Forest of Reading Silver Birch program before the big vote! Our language and guided reading program will center around the key inquiries and ideas that stem from this literature, and connects with Canada. Many of our students have already had contact with the authors too!! Virtual book clubs to come! http://classroom.google.com and students need to login with their emails and passwords.

We are also working together to create our own BYOD policy. We are setting the rules for students who wish to use their own devices for learning in our class. When we use them, there will always be enough devices for everyone to have access however – so your child does not need one. If they do bring one, they must keep it in their backpacks, and are responsible if anything happens to it.

Students are finishing their persuasive writing about their point of view regarding BYOD, and we will send home our policy when we are finished:)

In math we will also be starting algebra and how it relates to our patterning.
